Track #5
Leonard Cohen: Genius. Awkward. Perv.
His recordings have been described as “songs to slit your wrists to”. I never really understood that. I see his body of work as a peek through the interior of a human who is vulnerable, lonely, in love, in lust, in hate and continually putting the pen to paper when wickedness or beauty arrives.
From Take This Longing:
Your body like a searchlight/My poverty revealed/I would like to try your charity/Until you cry, “Now you must try my greed.”/And everything depends upon how near you sleep to me.
His catalogue of oftentimes lustful verses never stuck me as shocking or obscene. The human desire of touch from another is a frequent subject . Be it in blunt verses in The Future or Is This What You Wanted or Paper Thin Hotel or something as sweet as I’m Your Man or I Can’t Forget or Fingerprints the braveness of his honesty is alive.
Awkward attempts at love and lust make for some hard-to-listen-to prose. Nakedly stepping through messes in life can be a grotesque process but the beauty alongside those events is self-awareness (hopefully).
From Crazy to Love You
Sometimes I’d head for the highway/I’m old and the mirrors don’t lie/But crazy has places to hide in/That are deeper than goodbye/Had to go crazy to love you/had to let everything fall/had to be people I hated/had to be no one at all
Yes, he’s dark, moody, funny, scared, randy, had faith, had doubt. He was a man. Hallelujiah.
