NE-HI
Offers (Grand Jury)
I got a little flavor of NE-HI from a great music site. I was immediately hit by this great atmosphere of dreamy, loud, uncontrived songs. Their brand new album, Offers, has been a constant in my car – taking me to better destinations than most that I’m physically headed to. How about this for the music blender: a little late 70’s/early 80’s alternative, surf, punk, hypnotic vocals and a bad ass noisy guitar. This is the best thing I’ve heard in quite some time. I’m hooked.
This isn’t a garage band. I imagine them as more as an unpretentious band taking over the corner of an empty warehouse and filling the whole place with sharp drums, heavy bass and perfectly messy guitar sounds that take me straight into a Velvet Underground vibe. The vocals can be hypnotic, carrying on ideas with imagination-sparking “oooooh’s” and “uh!!’s”. Rock and roll needs these undefinable utterances. The lyrics do repeat frequently like a mantra. Hitting home the idea and circling the chorus like another perfect layer of dreaminess. My favorite is Every Dent. Great guitar punctuating the attention-grabbing lyrics: “Hard to ignore” and “hard to resist the voices in my head”.
One crazy thing that blows me away is how they decide to close their songs. They all seem to just SNAP shut. Almost snaps you out of the surreal state that the music puts you in. Leaves you wondering “what the fuck just happened?”. Then another song starts up and you get lost all over again.
